Licences

  • RPL - Recreational Pilot Licence
    Age

    For a recreational pilot licence (RPL), you must be at least 16 years old.

    Medical

    You must have a current medical certificate (Recreational, Class 1 or 2 Aviation Medical).

    Conditions

    RPL holders are limited to:

    • 25nm from the aerodrome where the flight began, the designated training area, or a direct route between the two.
    • day VFR private operations in a single engine aircraft.  If an individual already holds a pilot certificate issued by a recreational aviation administration organisation or a GFPT, they will be able to exercise the privileges after they have conducted a flight review.
    Requirements

    Applicants must:

    • have 25 hours flight time (comprising 20 hours dual and five hours solo).
    • pass a Recreational Pilot Licence Exam
    • pass a Aircraft Category Rating Exam
    • pass a flight test.

  • PPL - Private Pilot Licence
    Age

    For a private pilot licence (CPL), the applicant must be at least 17 years old.

    Medical

    The applicant must have a current medical certificate (Class 1 or 2 Aviation Medical).

    The table below summarises the aeronautical experience (flight hours) required in order to be issued a Private Pilot Licence.

    Theory Requirements

    Integrated Course Theory Exams
    The applicant must pass the Private Pilot Licence Exam set by Becker Helicopters prior to conducting the flight test.
    Non-Integrated Course Theory Exams
    Applicant must pass a CASA Private Pilot Licence Exam.

  • CPL - Commercial Pilot Licence

    For a commercial pilot licence (CPL), the applicant must be at least 18 years old.

    Medical

    The applicant must have a current medical certificate (Class 1 Aviation Medical).

    Requirements

    The applicant must pass theory exams in 7 subjects within a two-year period.

  • ATPL - Air Transport Pilot Licence
    Age

    For an air transport pilot licence (ATPL), the applicant must be at least 21 years old.

    Medical

    The applicant must have a current medical certificate (Class 1 Aviation Medical).

    Entry Requirements

    The applicant must pass theory exams within a two-year period.

    Requirements

    The applicant must:

    • hold a CPL or Multi-crew licence with the same category
    • have at least 1000 hours experience
    • complete a multi-crew cooperation course (MCC)
    • pass an ATPL flight test conducted under IFR in a multi-crew environment.


What is an Integrated Course

Integrated means an intensive course of training:

  • That is designed to ensure that a course participant receives ground theory training integrated with practical flight training; and
  • for which the ground theory training and practical flight training are conducted by the same operator
  • that is conducted according to a syllabus that satisfies the knowledge and flight standards specified in the Part 61 Manual of Standards for the grant of a private or commercial pilot licence
  • that is designed to be completed within a condensed period of time.

Converting an overseas licence

For an overseas licence holder to obtain a flight crew licence with an aircraft category rating, CASA must be satisified that the overseas licence is at least equivalent.  In addition, you must be able to demonstrate aviation English language proficiency and hold an authorisation to operate a radio.  For the issue of a CPL, MPL or ATPL, you must pass the flight test and theory exams specified in the Part 61 Manual of Standards.
