Fergus Ponder, winner of the Employee of the Year award, gave up his horse for a helicopter, then gave up land totally to move to the coast. His employer, Jan Becker, described him as “the dream person you want around”.
“He is excellent with the students, professional, an excellent pilot who takes care of the little things,” she said.
“He completes the team and makes it happen as much as we do, students come here because of Fergus.” For Fergus the award was a huge surprise.
“My wife and I had a change of career a couple of years ago – we came from the bush working on a cattle station,” he said.
“We have come a long way since then.”
Fergus initially learned to fly with Becker Helicopter Service and was later invited back to teach. He works as an instructor and pilot. The judges commented that Fergus displayed a high degree of commitment to his employer’s business and a genuine desire to assist in its growth. He had achieved many personal goals. “Mr Ponder fosters excellent relationships with client based on empathy and recognising and developing their strengths,” they said.
“He has a willingness to carry out a diverse range of duties from the huge tasks such as taking the responsibility of the lives of his students during training and also such tasks as cleaning.
“These along with his outstanding enthusiasm and positive attitude were all factors in awarding him Employee of the Year.”
