Skills and Experience
Captain Mike Becker is one of Australia’s most experienced helicopter instructors, with over 15,000 flight hours.
His career has been as diverse as the number of helicopter types he has flown – the smaller R22 to the larger B212 and Sikorski S62, and most types in between.
Mike Becker started flying in New Zealand in 1985 working for Capital Helicopters and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in Wellington. This was followed by a move to Tauranga to set up a flying school for Heli Academy before moving to Auckland to work for North Shore Helicopters. In 1986 he moved to the Northern Territory of Australia to fly a Bell47 on tourism, mustering and culling operations. In 1988 a move to Papua New Guinea saw him working, conducting mining and exploration, and high altitude long line operations in Bell and Sikorski helicopters for Heli Niugini. As his role expanded, he became involved in starting up new contracts and troubleshooting existing contracts. Late in 1989 Mike was seconded to the PNG Defence Force to fly UH1H helicopters in Bougainville on military operations. Keen to start a family, Mike and his wife Jan moved back to Australia in 1993. In 1995 he started Becker Helicopters to focus on flight training, fire fighting and multi engine operations.
Mike Becker is the recipient of the “Captain John Ashton Award for Flight Standards and Aviation Safety” by the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators of London.
Mike published his first book, “Mike Becker’s Helicopter Handbook”, in 1995. He has since added a series of instructional DVDs, and a range of theory books including “Night Vision Goggles for Helicopter Pilots”.
